The Perfect Audition
Does it ever happen?
Is it playing the opening of the Tchaikovsky concerto like Josh Bell? Or absolutely shredding that first page of Don Juan? What do you think?
I have heard some great players at auditions. And some of them played perfectly. But they didn’t always get the job. Why? Because playing perfectly isn’t the point for those listening.
Of course, you have to have chops, and if you don’t have the basics under control (intonation, rhythm, sound and style) chances are you’re not going to get past the first round.
Remember that the reason you are a musician is because you want to express human emotion, tell your story, and show your personality. You want to reach beyond the stage to touch those who are listening - even an audition committee behind the screen. We want to be moved by you! Everyone is looking for connection and your ability to connect past the screen is the key to your success.
Think about the bigger picture. Some of the most beautiful things in the world are imperfect. And your willingness to share yourself is what will make you stand out.
